Glycosaminoglycans (GAG)

Glycosaminoglycans, or GAGs, are natural molecules that contribute to a protective layer on the inside of the bladder.

The GAG layer acts as a thick barrier that sits on the surface of bladder cells, serving as a first line of defense. It limits the contact between bladder tissue and urinaty constituents, including bacteria.

 

GAGs have exceptional water-holding properties, keeping bladder tissues hydrated and cushioned. When this protective layer becomes damaged, it can lead to conditions like cystitis and recurrent urinary tract infections .
