Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid

A molecule found naturally in the body whose main function is to keep tissues well-lubricated and hydrated.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a sugar molecule found naturally in the body, especially in the skin, joints, and connective tissues. It plays an important role in water retention and tissue hydration.

This wording suggests that hyaluronic acid alone treats the conditions listed below, which is not the case; rather, it is one component.

  • Vulvovaginal atrophy: hyaluronic acid is known for enhancing moisture and elasticity in vaginal tissues;
  • Peyronie’s disease: hyaluronic acid may be used to treat the fibrous plaque that causes penile curvature;
  • Interstitial cystitis: hyaluronic acid is known to help replenish the bladder’s protective layer (GAG layer) which might be damaged by UTIs or other causes.
