Urothelium

Urothelium

The protective lining inside the bladder and urinary system.

The urothelium is a specialized lining that plays an important protective role within the urinary system. It covers the inner surface of the bladder, the ureters — tubes that carry urine from the kidneys, and the urethra — the tube that carries urine out of the body.

This lining is made of several layers of cells that work together. When the bladder is healthy, the urothelium functions effectively as a barrier and helps limit the entry of irritants and bacteria. When it becomes damaged, it can lead to urinary tract infections or bladder inflammations, such as cystitis.
